Nestling within 20 acres of beautiful woodland, and close to the Howardian Hills, these eco-friendly lodges blend into the peaceful, tranquil environment with gorgeous views across the coarse fishing lake. Great Wood Lodges are within easy travelling distance of York, Whitby and Harrogate - and the North Yorkshire Moors are perfect for exploring on foot or by bike.

The village of Flaxton is about two miles away where there are plenty of cycle routes and walks, as well as horse riding and golf. You can also visit some of the town's pubs - The Blacksmith's in the village serves some cracking local beers. No visit to York would be complete without a visit to Betty's Tea Rooms and a tour of the 13th century cathedral.

Great Wood Lodge is timber-framed with a galleried roof and wooden oak floors. It's been constructed using natural insulation, plant oil-based paints and energy saving lighting. Perfect for four adults or a couple, there's a double bedroom with ensuite and a twin room, an open plan lounge/diner and patio doors that open onto a covered verandah with lovely views.

Book a ride on the Pickering steam train and soak up the spectacular views of the North Yorkshire Moors then head to the National Railway Museum in York for a history of the railways.

Our Top Tip
"Dalby Forest has tons of activities including two breweries - ale lovers will enjoy visiting the Black Sheep and Cropton visitor centres. It's also great for walking and cycling."

Fun Days Out in Vale Of York

Dig is a unique and somewhat educational attraction in York offering children the opportunity to enjoy excavation, discovery, and digging. Within the site is a discovery centre, several pits filled with Roman and Medieval ruins and a science lab where children can take part in exciting experiments. Staff are on hand at all times to help the children and to ensure they get the most from the experience. The attraction can get busy during school holidays and pre booking is recommended.

Castle Howard

Castle Howard is one of the regions most beautiful and historic landmarks and is located in 1,000 acres of parkland with breathtaking gardens to explore. As well as exploring the castle visitors can enjoy attractios including the unique Land Train - the best way to see the entire park. There is also a large lake offering boat trips during the summer months. In high season the site is very popular with families and offers organised activities for children including tours, talks, crafting and animal encounters. The site also has a Nature Trail which is fun for the whole family and an Adventure Playground where children can run off some energy.

Creepy Crawlies
Come rain or shine children need to be entertained and Creepy Crawlies just north of York is the perfect place! This all weather attraction caters for toddlers and children up to 12 years old with a huge array of climbing equipment, ball pools, slides, chutes and adventure areas. Adults can relax and enjoy a coffee and a snack while the kids are having fun.  The site also has a large and rather impressive outdoor area with pet zone and pedal track with Go karts. There is also a pond with fish and a sensory zone where children can touch and feel new and interesting things.

As usual, Don and Helen were most attentive, friendly and helpful. The lodge was extremely well presented and fully equipped with everything we needed. There were even new settees that were more comfortable than before which was very nice. The surroundings were beautiful and the wildlife astounding. What with the fishing lake only a few paces away what was not to like?

Nice relaxing site if you like peace and quiet and an abundance of wildlife to keep you entertained to while away the day
We had a beautiful relaxing time in wonderful surroundings with excellent hosts
Excellent lodge and lovely owners, beautiful surroundings with abundant wildlife.
Great Wood Lodges are spotlessly clean, comfortable and very well equipped. A very good location for visiting York and attractions nearby, such as Castle Howard. With just 4 lodges and adults only, the site is very quiet and wildlife is attracted, especially birds which use the many feeders in the surrounding trees. The lake is popular with visiting anglers (and the local herons!).
An amazing place to stay , lodges are 5* , very clean and well maintained . the warm welcome from Helen and the milk and tea are very appreciated . fishing and Dons knowledge of the area and wildlife are wonderful.
Great Wood Lodges were exactly what we hoped for, quiet and peaceful but within easy reach of so many activities. We were particularly impressed with the kitchen, which was better equipped than our own! Thank you to Don and Helen for a lovely stay.
We thoroughly enjoyed our few days in a this comfortable, well equipped lodge in an beautiful peaceful location, hidden in a wood. Great place to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet. We loved watching the wildlife on the lake and in the forest from the lodge windows.
